New California Truancy Bill could punish Parents with Special Needs Children

It’s a new year with a new law that parents in the State of California should be aware of.  It’s Senate Bill No. 1317 and it relates to Truancy of Children in the State of California.  The purpose of this law is to hold parents accountable if your child does not show up to school.  I realize that this is a huge problem for schools across the State and when children do not attend school, it can affect a student’s academic performance, which will have consequences for their future as an independent adult.  However, what I cannot comprehend is why the State of California did not provide an exemption for parents whose children have an IEP or 504 Plan.
