Learning Outside the Box

As children and parents negotiate their way through the final weeks of summer and approach the beginning of a new school year, they experienced the inevitable and vast array of thoughts and feelings about the upcoming challenges they will face.  Many students feel a predominance of excitement as they anticipate who their new teachers will be, look forward to seeing old friends, making new ones, and sharing the experiences they have had since June.  As a person, I hope that all children feel, on balance, more excitement than concern at the prospect of a fresh opportunity; however, as a Special Educator with thirteen years of school based experience, I know that many – if not most – children with special needs face every school year with worry and trepidation. Send Em’ To The Principal’s Office!

When I was in elementary school, I had a bit of a tough time of it.  From first to third grade I spent an inordinate amount of time in the principal’s office, the punitive measure of choice at my elementary school.  Every paper thrown, inappropriate comment bellowed and t-shirt removed during a reading lesson (I won’t get into this) evoked the same response from my teachers:

To Punish or Not to Punish?

Punishment is widely used in our society.

Punishment can be seen in imprisonment, late fees, speeding tickets, and detention all for not following socially acceptable rules. By definition, punishment is anything that follows a behavior that leads to the decrease of that behavior in the future. This may include adding something to the environment or situation such as giving detention or issuing a parking fine. It also includes removing things from the environment of situation such as taking away dessert after dinner as well as the popular “grounding” (e.g., no television or computer, cannot go over friend’s homes on the weekends).  Read the rest of this entry →
