Choiceworks by Bee Visual, LLC is a visual support app that lets you retire the cardboard and magnet schedules systems you are most likely using right now. This app is a must have for any family raising a child with special needs struggling with teaching routines, turn taking and making proper choices when angry. According to the Choiceworks app page “this app is designed for caregivers to provide clear and consistent support to foster a child’s independence, positive behavior, and emotional regulation at home and in the community. It can also be customized for teachers in a school setting. It was created with the support of leading hospitals and child development specialists.”

Bee Visual did an excellent job of streamlining the app so that it is fun, easy to use and affordable at $14.99. It’s broken up into three boards each with its own companion book designed to explain each board from a child’s perspective. The three boards are the:

  1. Schedule Board;
  2. Waiting Board; and
  3. Feeling Board

Schedule Board

The Schedule board is, in my opinion, the most impressive part of the app. You are able to easily set up schedules using 165 preloaded images or you can use the devices built in camera to take your own images. Each schedule for the iPad app holds up to 8 steps, 5 if on the iPhone, and includes options to add a timer for each step. I set-up my son’s morning schedule in less than 2 minutes and saved it to the schedule list. You can create and save as many schedules as you like. As your child completes an item on their schedule they get to move the item from the “I need to” column to the “all done” column. Your child will receive audio conformation as this occurs. It also allows your child to choose a reward for completing all of the tasks on the schedule, such as watching TV or playing a video game.

Waiting Board

The waiting board teaches your child waiting skills using a timer to give a concrete time table. The waiting board allows you to change what you are waiting for, how long you will be waiting and gives your child choices on what to do while waiting.

Feeling Board

The feelings boards teaches your child what they should do when they are upset and then after they calm down it lets them makes choices on what they are allowed to do if handled properly.

Based on the price, ease of use and customization I would recommend the Choiceworks app to our readers. This app is especially helpful for children with autism and behavior challenges who need visual support and structure.  While Choiceworks is a great app, even at $14.99, Bee Visual has informed me that they will be running a 5 day sale and lowering the price to $6.99.  The sale will start 12:01 a.m. EST Friday January 20th and end at 12 pm midnight EST Tuesday 1/24/12.  Just come back to this review during that time period and click on the app widget below.

For those of you who don't have an iPad you can purchase the original version on amazon.
